CMMC 2.0 Compliance
Safeguarding Federal Contract Information & Controlled Unclassified Information
CMMC 2.0 ensures organizations handling DoD data have cybersecurity controls that are documented, implemented, and assessed to mitigate risk.

What Is CMMC 2.0 Compliance?
As the Department of Defense strengthens cybersecurity requirements across the Defense Industrial Base, CMMC 2.0 has become a key gatekeeper for contract eligibility. Organizations that handle Federal Contract Information or Controlled Unclassified Information must understand how CMMC applies to them, what certification level is required, and how to prepare effectively.
Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) 2.0 is the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) program used to verify that defense contractors and subcontractors have implemented appropriate cybersecurity practices to protect sensitive government information.
CMMC 2.0 focuses on safeguarding:
- Federal Contract Information (FCI)
- Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
Rather than creating entirely new security requirements, CMMC 2.0 aligns closely with existing federal standards including FAR 52.204-21,
NIST SP 800-171, and a subset of NIST SP 800-172. These standards are then then enforced through DoD contracts.
CMMC 2.0 ensures organizations handling DoD data have cybersecurity controls that are documented, implemented, and assessed to mitigate risk.
Who Needs CMMC Certification?
Any organization that is part of the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) may need to be CMMC certified:
- If your company is a DoD prime contractor or subcontractor
- Handles, stores, processes, or transmits FCI or CUI
- If you require a contract or solicitation language to meet a specific CMMC level
CMMC requirements flow down the supply chain, meaning subcontractors may need certification even if they do not contract directly with the DoD.
General guidance:
- Organizations handling only FCI typically need CMMC Level 1
- Organizations handling CUI typically need CMMC Level 2
- Organizations supporting high-priority or high-risk DoD programs may require CMMC Level 3
CMMC is enforced only when specified in a contract, so organizations should always review solicitation and contract language carefully.

How to Obtain CMMC 2.0 Compliance
Obtaining CMMC 2.0 compliance is a structured, evidence-driven Process. While the exact effort depends on your target level and environment, most organizations follow these steps:
- 1. Identify Information Types and Scope
- 2. Determine the Required CMMC Level
- 3. Implement Required Security Controls
- 4. Develop Required Documentation
- 5. Prepare for Assessment
- 6. Manage POA&Ms (When Allowed)
The Four Pillars of the CMMC 2.0 Framework
CMMC 2.0 is commonly described using four key pillars that reflect how the program was redesigned:
Simplification of the Model
The framework was reduced from five levels to three, making requirements easier to understand and implement.
Alignment with Existing Standards
CMMC 2.0 aligns directly with established standards:
- FAR 52.204-21
- NIST SP 800-171
- Selected requirements from NIST SP 800-172
Flexible Assessment Paths
The revised model allows:
- Self-assessments for Level 1 and some Level 2 environments
- Third-party assessments when higher assurance is required
- Government-led assessments for Level
Phased Implementation
CMMC is being rolled out gradually through DoD contracts, allowing industry time to prepare and mature cybersecurity programs.
New CMMC 2.0 Levels
CMMC 2.0 consists of three certification levels, each aligned to the sensitivity of the information being protected.
CMMC Level 1 – Foundational
- Protects Federal Contract Information (FCI)
- Based on FAR 52.204-21 basic safeguarding requirements
- Requires annual self-assessment
CMMC Level 2 – Advanced
- Protects Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
- Based on NIST SP 800-171 (110 controls)
- Requires self-assessment or third-party certification depending on contract risk
CMMC Level 3 – Expert
- Protects CUI in high-risk or high-priority environments
- Includes enhanced requirements from NIST SP 800-172
- Requires government-led assessment

What Makes a Cloud Platform “CMMC-Ready”?
CMMC compliance is ultimately determined by the strength of an organization’s overall cybersecurity posture, but the platforms and tools in use play a critical role. A CMMC-ready platform must not only support compliance efforts, but it must also be part of the assessed environment.
For systems handling CUI or FCI, organizations should rely on cloud solutions aligned with FedRAMP-equivalent security requirements, including strong access controls, encryption, and auditability. While secure software alone does not guarantee certification, platforms that are properly configured and operated with compliance in mind can significantly reduce risk and operational effort. Compliant technology does not replace a cybersecurity program, but it can make that program more consistent, defensible, and efficient.
The Timeline for CMMC 2.0 Implementation
The current timeline for CMMC 2.0 implementation, based on the latest DoD rollout plans:
Phase 1 – November 10, 2025 to November 9, 2026
- CMMC Level 1 and Level 2 requirements begin showing up in contracts.
- Contractors can satisfy compliance largely through self-assessments and must report results in the Supplier Performance Risk System (SPRS).
Phase 2 – November 10, 2026 to November 9, 2027
- Level 2 contracts increasingly require third-party assessments by certified C3PAOs.
- Self-assessments continue for Level 1.
Phase 3 – November 10, 2027 to November 9, 2028
- Broader implementation of assessed certification requirements for Level 2.
- Level 3 Expert requirements (including government-led assessment) begin expanding.
Phase 4 – November 10, 2028 and Beyond
- Full implementation: CMMC requirements apply to all applicable DoD contracts and solicitations with no exceptions.
- Contractors must maintain certification continuously to remain eligible.
